Which Has Cheaper Groceries

Kroger or Walmart? I am having a hard time telling. We are normally Walmart shoppers, but I decided to go to Kroger. I noticed a few different items like chocolate milk in the gallon (we have to buy 3 a week!) was half the price at Kroger vs. Walmart- this was a HOORAY!!! I hate the idea of having to use a Reward Card- they are just setting you up to forget it. I do like that Kroger has Double Coupons-- I only had one was that was eligible today. I also like the fact that Kroger does not have much to distract you vs what you are there for. If I was not on a tight budget I would not mind this because it is fun to be distracted sometimes. I think I saved around 6.50 w coupons- that made me happy- seeing how I normally leave the coupons at home! I'll probably try Kroger again next weekend-- hopefully my list will be a little smaller than it was this week.

I did this same "research" when I retired. I found that Kroger turned out to be the better deal. I actually go so far as to match my list, their sale add and my coupons to get the very best deals. I use the small Kroger "tag" that fits on my keyring. I know I can never get to the store without my keys. If you go to a Kroger that has a gas station, you will also get a discount for gas with your receipt/card. I still use Wal-Mart for stuff like cleaning, laundry and pet supplies. Just by being more aware of my spending, I have cut our regular expenses by about two-thirds. All our credit cards are already paid and cancelled! Our rule is "if we can't pay cash for something, we don't need it". If we know a large purchase will have to be made, we save our money and pay cash. Aside from the house and my car, we don't owe anybody anything ! Now I'm working on negotiating with the cable and phone companies for better rates. They might laugh at me, or they might actually give me what I ask for. It sure can't hurt to try.
